There has been a change in the dry waste collection and management system of Bengaluru since the establishment of Dry Waste Collection Centers (DWCCs). These centers have been a step towards the decentralization of waste management.
DWCCs of Bengaluru have provided an institutional pathway to the formalization of waste management in the city. The establishment of these centers has also brought about significant changes in the lives of waste pickers providing them with a stable income and more dignity.
The materials that are thrown as “waste” by the people are the same materials that earn these people their income. As the waste pickers deal with these waste materials every day, they are very much aware about waste management and have great environmental consciousness.
Through their efforts of segregation and recycling, the waste pickers reduce the materials that end up in the landfills and have an invaluable contribution towards the environment.
