Thekkady, Kerala

Embark on a thrilling 3-hour journey from Kottayam, winding through the enchanting hairpin bends of the Western Ghats, until you reach the breathtaking beauty of Thekkady, Kerala’s eco-tourism gem. Amidst the dense forest, lies a tale of resilience and transformation embodied by two tribes: the Mannans and Paliyans. For generations, they thrived on the forest’s bounty, gathering firewood, honey, spices, and more for their livelihood. Yet, their existence faced challenges as their traditional way of life clashed with modern regulations and exploitation.

But hope flickered with the Eco-development initiative. Through this program, their lives saw remarkable improvements. Access to education, healthcare, and better housing became realities. Concrete houses replaced bamboo dwellings, marking a shift towards modern comforts while preserving cultural heritage. The tribes, proud custodians of their traditions, showcased their unique dances, gaining recognition across the nation.

Despite modern influences, their connection to nature remained unbreakable. They forged partnerships with the forest department, evolving from exploited gatherers to empowered guardians, working as watchers and tribal guides for the department. Now, they cultivate spices like pepper and cardamom, selling through the Ecodevelopment Committees. This symbiotic relationship with the forest ensures sustainability while fostering economic independence.

As the sun sets over Thekkady’s lush landscape, the tribes’ story echoes a narrative of resilience, adaptation, and harmony—a testament to the human spirit’s enduring bond with nature.
